SAMPLE LESSON BELOW

THE NATURE OF GOD

LESSON OBJECTIVE

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the basic attributes of God's character and be able to explain how God's nature affects your relationship with Him.

KEY VERSE TO MEMORIZE

"God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." - John 4:24

OPENING PRAYER SUGGESTION

"Heavenly Father, as I study Your Word today, help me to understand who You are more clearly. Open my heart and mind to learn about Your character and how I can know You better. Guide my thoughts and give me wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen."

LESSON OVERVIEW

Understanding God's nature is fundamental to the Christian faith. Today we will explore what the Bible teaches about who God is, focusing on His essential attributes that never change. This knowledge will deepen your relationship with Him and strengthen your faith.

WHO IS GOD?

GOD IS SPIRIT

The Bible teaches that God is spirit, which means He is not limited by a physical body like humans. Jesus explained this to the woman at the well:

"God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:24)

This means God is not confined to one place or limited by physical boundaries. He is present everywhere at all times. David understood this when he wrote:

"Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there!" (Psalm 139:7-8)

GOD IS ETERNAL

God has always existed and will always exist. He is not bound by time like we are:

"Before the mountains were born, before you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God." (Psalm 90:2)

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation 1:8)

GOD IS UNCHANGING

Unlike humans, God never changes in His character, promises, or nature:

"For I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow." (James 1:17)

GOD IS ALL-KNOWING

God knows everything - past, present, and future. Nothing is hidden from Him:

"There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account." (Hebrews 4:13)

"Great is our Lord, and mighty in power. His understanding is infinite." (Psalm 147:5)

GOD'S CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES

GOD IS HOLY

Holiness means God is completely pure and separate from sin. He is morally perfect:

"One called to another, and said, 'Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!'" (Isaiah 6:3)

"But just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; because it is written, 'You shall be holy; for I am holy.'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)

GOD IS LOVE

Love is not just something God does - it is who He is by nature:

"He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love." (1 John 4:8)

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

GOD IS JUST

God is perfectly fair and righteous in all His judgments:

"The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice: a God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is he." (Deuteronomy 32:4)

GOD IS MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS

God shows compassion and kindness to us even when we don't deserve it:

"Yahweh is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness." (Psalm 103:8)

"But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)." (Ephesians 2:4-5)

KEY POINTS SUMMARY

• God is spirit - not limited by physical form

• God is eternal - always has existed and always will

• God is unchanging - His character never varies

• God is all-knowing - nothing is hidden from Him

• God is holy - completely pure and separate from sin

• God is love - this defines His very nature

• God is just - perfectly fair in all His ways • God is merciful - shows compassion we don't deserve

SELF-REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. How does knowing that God is all-knowing affect the way you live your daily life?

  1. Which attribute of God brings you the most comfort, and why?

  1. How should understanding God's holiness change the way you approach Him in prayer?

  1. What does it mean to you personally that "God is love"?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

In Your Prayer Life: Remember that you are speaking to a holy, loving, all-knowing God. You can be completely honest with Him because He already knows your thoughts and loves you completely.

In Your Daily Decisions: Since God never changes and is always just, you can trust His guidance completely. His standards for right and wrong don't shift based on culture or circumstances.

In Difficult Times: When facing challenges, remember that God's love for you is unchanging, He knows exactly what you're going through, and His justice ensures that all wrongs will eventually be made right.

In Your Relationships: As God shows mercy and grace to you, look for ways to extend the same to others. His love through you can impact those around you.
